What Is Original Medicare?

Original Medicare is the alternative to Medicare Advantage, which is the private Medicare option offered through Part C. With Original Medicare, beneficiaries receive hospital insurance and medical insurance that allows them to afford hospital stays, medically necessary services, and preventive health services. With Original Medicare, you only pay a portion of the Medicare-approved amount for services. While covered by Original Medicare, you must pay premiums to keep your benefits. Deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments are also costs that may be incurred.

What Does Original Medicare Cover?

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. Here’s what each covers:

Premium-Free Part A

If you have paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters (10 years), you receive Part A benefits premium-free. That means there is no monthly cost to maintain your Part A coverage. This option is not available for Part B, so you’ll always have to pay that monthly premium.
